Inland Water Transport is a fuel efficient, environment friendly and cost-effective mode of transport having potential to supplement the overburdened rail and congested roads. These are the most important pieces to complete the chain from hinterland to ports and to connect remote areas to major road/rail hubs.
India wields a unique geographical strength of having a vast expanse of water networks. In a bid to leverage this strength, development of Inland Waterways is one of the focus areas for creating an integrated transport network system to realize the untapped potential of waterways.
Traffic on Inland Waterways has witnessed exponential growth in CAGR of 19% and reached to 73.6 million tons in the year 2019-20. IWAI aims at increasing the modal share of freight movement through IWT from 2% to 3% and traffic volume to ~120 million tons by FY 2030.
For co-ordinated development of connectivity infrastructure and to promote inland waterways transportation it is required to – setup coastal freight stations, construct of river-sea vessels, introduce a customised vessel financing scheme for inland vessels, encourage investments and creating a supporting eco-system of financing, insurance, shipbuilding and repair facilities in India
