Dry bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, steel, cement, fertilisers, and food grains constitute over 40 per cent of domestic freight movement. Such cargo is usually transported in unpackaged or loose form, which makes it difficult to switch transport modes. The new logistics policy will emphasize on a sector-wise assessment of the supply chains to be in coordination with all stakeholders.
An integrated logistics strategy for the core sector will identify projects for bridging the logistics gaps with a view to reducing inventories, ensure optimal utilisation of transportation assets, improve visibility and reliability of supply chains, address weighment scanning and other enforcement issues and work to promote reverse logistics and reduction in empty trips
